Magazine Editing

Though I was an experienced television journalist and had written lots for the Brown University website, I had never edited a magazine. That changed, pretty quickly, in the fall of 2011 when I tasked with producing my first issue of the Cate Bulletin. Before long, it was my favorite part of my job at Cate School. I loved choosing the themes and then finding the stories to illustrate them. I traveled to a summer camp, a family farm, a landscape designer's garden, and surfboard fin engineer's office to cover just some of what Cate alums were up to. Of course, I found lots of stories right on Cate's beautiful campus too. Working with a fairly lean staff and vendors, including a designer, photographers, a copy editor and a printer, we did some beautiful work and had a lot of fun along the way. At Cal Maritime, I inherited a pretty stodgy magazine, and immediately worked to add better storytelling, visuals, and design. We made every issue better than the last.

I was delighted to attend the CASE Editor's Forum (in-person) in March 2022, which is the go-to conference for alumni magazine editors--I highly recommend it. I met lots of great colleagues in the profession and was inspired by some really good sessions. As a result, I commissioned my first illustrated cover, visible above, top left.
